Why Big Companies Rarely Invest in Small Startups

Some time ago,i organised a meeting with my cousin and one of my friends in Australia.

My friend is an entrepreneur who recently started a business in the facial beauty space. He’s developing a project that uses AI to analyze people’s skin condition from uploaded photos and then leverages that data to train predictive models.Right now,he’s looking for early-stage investors.

My cousin,on the other hand, has worked for several years in the investment division of a medical asthetics company.I thought it would be interesting to bring them together - whether to explore potential investment, offer some advice,or at the very least ,build new friendships.

Initially,I assumed it would be quite straightforward for a large company to invest in a small startup like this, especially since the funding required is relatively modest.Plus,it seems like a win-win.the company would help the startup grow and collect data, while the startup could,in return, enhance the company’s brand by showcasing innovative AI features.

However, after speaking with my cousin,I realized things aren’t that simple. There are a few key reasons why big companies tend to hesitate:

1.Data sensitivity.

For large company, data is extremely valuable. They are reluctant to trust a small startup with sensitive information - especially in today’s climate, where any hint that client data is being missused could seriously damage their reputation. The risk simply overweighs the potential gain.

2.Organization ineria.

As the saying goes,it’s hard to trun a big ship.Adopting new AI systems could ultimately reduce costs by replacing certain roles-for example, skincare consultants(dermatologists ).But if the implementation fails, the company risks losing experienced staff, dealing with layoffs and rehiring headaches. This disruption makes leadership cautious.

3.Better fits elsewhere.

For startups,it might be more practical to collaborate with smaller companies. These firms are often more open to adopting new technologies because they face competitive pressures and see inovation as a lifeline. They also maybe more willing to cut costs with AI solutions. And frankly, because some smaller players already operate in a loosely regulated gray areas, they tend to be less stringent about data compliance .

4.Focus on one area

When i first heard about my friends’ business plan,I was impressed by how ambitious their plan is.They want to do everything -from software to hardware - and eventually build a full “facial ecosystem”

But during the conversation with my cousin,I realized that investors often prefer startups that focus on one specific area and achieve some remarkable there, rather than trying to cover too many fronts.

Of course,in the begining.Everyone dreams big.We all imagine becoming next Bill Gates or Steve Jobs, building the next Apple or Microsoft. But it seems that starting small and focused is often more realistic -and strategic - path
